2023 Jubiliarian
“They made me feel like I could do anything,” Sister Mary Frances Grasinger, Ph.D., says, remembering the loving and attentive Sisters of St. Joseph who taught her at St. John High School in Uniontown and who inspired her to enter religious life and pursue a ministry in education.
Beginning in 1956, Sister Mary Frances (Clarice) spent 19 years teaching elementary, middle, and high school students in Pittsburgh Diocesan schools, including Mount Gallitzin Academy, Quigley High School, and Fontbonne Academy, where she served as vice principal. Helping students discover their gifts was a special joy for her.
Teaching science was especially rewarding, she notes, as “the more we learn about creation, about our planet and universes and galaxies – the more we learn about God, who we know is a good and generous and loving God.”
Calling it a blessing “to serve God by serving students,” Sister Mary Frances guided the professional development of school administrators for more than three decades as a professor of educational administration and in leadership roles at Duquesne University School of Education.
With a desire to “make the love of God known to all people, without distinction,” Sister Mary Frances delights in caring for others and for creation through prayer, hospitality, and gardening at the Motherhouse.
