History
Founded in Ebensburg, PA, the Sisters of St. Joseph relocated to Baden in 1901. Sisters have ministered in 32 states; Washington D.C.; and abroad in China, Brazil, Liberia, Jamaica, and Nicaragua.
As educators, Sisters served in 74 parochial schools, 15 Catholic high schools, and operated 4 sponsored schools. In healthcare, they staffed St. Joseph Hospital, served at Georgetown University Hospital and Jefferson Hospital, and founded Villa St. Joseph.
They were the first Catholic Sisters from Western PA to send missionaries abroad and the only women religious in the state to send missionaries to China.
The congregation established the first Girls Hope program in the country and founded Casa San José, both of which continue to serve neighbors in the region.
Today, the Sisters’ outreach has expanded to include fields such as prison chaplaincy, ecological sustainability, justice movements, and spiritual development. The lasting impact of their service to God and neighbor is evident, locally and globally.
